It's interesting that Paul in writing to the Corinthians about spiritual gifts tells them and so us also, that the operation of these gifts must be in love. That's the way for God's will to be done through us. The gifts are for the benefit of the Church and us as individuals but will be ineffectual regarding God's heart for us , if we use them in a self-seeking or harsh manner.

1 Corinthians 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

We can see this same point brought out in another way in Paul's letter to the Ephesians in Chapter 4.

Ephesians 4:15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head.

We are to speak the truth in love. We can speak the truth in a manner to cut down and hurt others but that is not what God wants of His people. When we speak the truth in love we build up or edify the body of believers who are influenced by us.

That should be our modus operandi for using all God's gifts to us. Without having the backdrop of love in our hearts they are ineffectual to us as far as God is conserned. But, WITH the backdrop of love in our hearts we do God's will and edify ourselves and the body of Christ and please God.
